The second game of the FABC/USSSA “Futures Shootout” matched up top rising juniors and seniors from around the state. 6’4 rising junior Mike Frazier from Tampa Plant notched the first points of the game with a three for the Navy squad. This was answered by a three pointer for the White team by 6’3 rising junior Shawn Smith of Jacksonville ACDS. It was clearly an even battle between the teams and when the first set of subs came in at the 4:16 mark of the first quarter, White held a 13-11 advantage. The Navy replacements would turn the game around at that point. The first quarter ended with Navy up by a score of 27-25. They were led by 5’11 rising junior Farad Cobb of West Palm Beach Summit Christian with 9 points. The White was paced by Smith with 7 points.

Two games, one featuring rising freshmen and sophomores and the other featuring rising juniors and seniors, took place this past Friday at Vanguard High School in Ocala. While there may have been tournaments with a “higher profile” this past holiday weekend, the Hoop Mountain Memorial Day Showcase was a very good event with quality team play, competitive teams, and a few players that came out of the woodwork. Because of family commitments related to the holiday, we were only able to catch Saturday’s action. In the high school age groups (15U thru 17U) the winners were 15U Daytona Beach Wildcats, 16U Sarasota Explosion, and 17U DH Warriors.
