FHSAA State Tournament - Round 3 Results

Written by Guy Power Monday, 01 March 2010 16:47

The Final Four for each classification is set. Not a lot of surprises from Round 3 as you gotta pick an "upset special" a couple of times. It would have been nice to see Ft. Pierce Central send Cardinal Gibbons back south. But, that wasn't the case, as Gibbons held on for the "W".  Sickles (Tampa) provided the upset as they downed Clearwater in a close battle to the finish. I had this feeling that Avon Park would do it. But, I didn't put my money where my thoughts took me and it cost me. A good job as they defeated the Vikings at home. Everything else ran pretty much as expected.

Round 3 breakdown worked well as 21/24 comes out to an 88% win percentage:

Class 1A - 4/4, Class 2A - 4/4, Class 3A - 3/4, Class 4A - 3/4, Class 5A - 3/4, Class 6A 4/4

Overall:  141/168  and I'm back to an 84% accuracy. I can live with that!

FHSAA State Tournament - Round 2 Results

Written by Guy Power Wednesday, 24 February 2010 16:09

Well, the Second Round proved eventful to say the least. Class 1A helped as the “favorites” sealed the deal in their wins. Class 2A proved that Pensacola Christian just might be for real while the “pick ‘em” of Florida Christian proved me wrong. My “upset special” in Class 3A of Fernandina Beach was not the upset I thought might materialize. Well, what I can say about Class 4A, but “WOW!”. Pre-season favorite Norland upset in overtime by Cardinal Gibbons and Creekside proved no fluke as they defeated Palatka yet again. Rutherford downing Godby and Nature Coast over a quality Ridgewood squad were yet other great games. My upset pick of Blake didn’t happen and Oak ridge is trying to make a believer out of me that we were in the pre-season over ranking them as high as #2 in the classification. Class 5A featured some great matchups and Sickles and Newsome proved yet again that they are teams to be respected. Many will call the Dwyer-Blanche Ely game the championship game as Dwyer came out on top. Class 6A showed that St. Petersburg and Columbus are playing their best hoops right now.

Round 2,  35 of 48 games, works out to a relatively poor 73% accuracy. Here's the breakdown......

Class 1A : 8/8   Class 2A : 6/8   Class 3A : 7/8   Class 4A : 2/8   Class 5A : 6/8 Class 6A : 6/8

Overall, 120 of 144, is a more respectable 83% "pick 'em" accuracy. Round 3 are up now!

FHSAA State tournament - Round 1 Results

Written by Guy Power Friday, 19 February 2010 07:14

Well, the First Round is over and you can see the results below. A good feeling in 6A not missing any games and I knew better than to pick against Kathleen as they seem to be peaking at the right time in their win over one of the strongest Osceola teams in quite some time in 5A. My "upset special" in 5A didn't happen as Tate handled Ft. Walton Beach. The same held true in 4A as Andrew Jackson and Jensen Beach (a 4 point loss on 12-28 free throw shooting) lost their respective games. However, Palatka did their job in beating Bishop Kenny amid a controversial intentional foul call late in the game. The surprise in 3A was Glades Central edging American Heritage (Plantation) as Glades held a superior rebounding advantage throughout the game. Last year's Cinderella in 2A, Franklin County, was blitzed by Maclay (Tallahassee). Class 1A actually held no surprises as I usually will pick more upsets in this class than any other.....  Round Two selections coming this weekend!

Overall, 85 of 96 games works out to 89% accuracy, not a bad first round..........

Class 1A : 13/16   Class 2A : 14/16   Class 3A : 14/16   Class 4A : 14/16   Class 5A : 14/16 (dang it, it shoulda been 15)  Class 6A : 16/16
